About Dynamic Wallpapers

What are Dynamic Wallpapers?

Dynamic Wallpapers were first introduced by Apple as “Dynamic Desktop” in macOS Mojave (10.14) in 2018. Dynamic Wallpapers automatically change their appearance throughout the day based on your location. They can be configured to just match your system time or to change in sync with the position of the sun moving across the sky.

What is sun mode?

Your wallpaper adjusts to the current sun position of your location.

This mode reproduces the exact sun conditions according to when your photo was taken. It also takes the seasons into account, meaning: In winter, the wallpaper will automatically choose a lower sun than in summer.

The sun mode only works if GPS data is included in the Exif data of your images. The Dynamic Wallpaper Creator Engine automatically checks if the data is correctly included in your files. If your GPS/Exif data is not correct you can use Adobe Bridge to check or add new meta-data. The important Exif meta-data for Dynamic Wallpapers are:

  • DateTimeOriginal
  • GPSLatitude
  • GPSLongitude

There is also an online tool for adding GPS/EXIF data: https://thexifer.net/

What can I do if my Dynamic Wallpaper is not working/not updating?

Due to a bug in macOS it can happen that a Dynamic Wallpaper gets stuck. Please try the following steps:

  1. Click on the  in the top left of the menu bar, go to “System Preferences and open “Desktop & Screen Saver”
  2. Choose one of the Dynamic Wallpapers delivered out of the box with macOS and set it to “Dynamic” in the dropdown
  3. Open Finder, go to the folder where your Dynamic Wallpaper is stored, right-click on it and select “Set as desktop background”

In case this doesn't work, a restart of your Mac usually resolves the issue.
